Network identity and registry guide

ASN and provider-independent IP space for small networks

A small network may need independent routing or address registration, but an ASN and provider-independent address space solve different problems. Neither resource provides an Internet connection by itself.

What an ASN does

An Autonomous System Number identifies the network originating BGP routes under an agreed routing policy. Networks using a single upstream's managed routing may not need their own ASN. Elisteka's ASN sponsorship fee is €99 per year, excluding VAT and subject to RIPE NCC eligibility.

Existing IPv4 PI and legacy resources

Provider Independent IPv4 belongs to an eligible registered End User rather than being part of a provider's leased allocation. RIPE NCC does not issue new IPv4 PI. Elisteka sponsors existing eligible IPv4 PI or legacy space for €129 per year, excluding VAT; this fee does not buy or supply an IPv4 /24. Elisteka's own IPv4 leasing inventory is fully leased, with a waiting list.

IPv6 PI /48

IPv6 PI is independently assigned to a qualifying End User. Elisteka's IPv6 PI /48 sponsorship fee is €129 per year excluding VAT; applications and holder eligibility require RIPE NCC review. New IPv6 PI application preparation, if needed, is a separate service under the published sponsoring-LIR terms.

When simpler provider addressing is enough

If you do not originate your own routes or need independently registered space, your upstream's address allocation may be simpler. A leased IPv6 prefix is another option when a larger planned address space is needed without the same independent resource registration. Compare the responsible holder, ongoing costs, upstream support and renumbering risk.

What sponsorship covers and what it does not

Annual fees include the applicable RIPE NCC per-resource charge and agreed registry coordination. Sponsorship does not include physical connectivity, new IPv4 PI assignment, guaranteed route propagation or automatic approval. The End User remains responsible for their organisation and usage information.

Frequently asked questions

Does an ASN include IP address space?

No. An ASN identifies a routing network; IPv4 and IPv6 prefixes are separate resources. ASN registration and actual BGP service are distinct.

Can I apply for a new IPv4 PI block?

No. RIPE NCC no longer issues new IPv4 PI assignments. Sponsorship is for an eligible existing IPv4 PI or legacy resource; it does not provide a new /24.

What are Elisteka's annual sponsorship fees?

ASN €99, existing IPv4 PI/legacy €129, and IPv6 PI /48 €129, each per year ex-VAT, billed annually in advance. Eligibility is reviewed.

When might I not need my own ASN?

If a single provider originates and manages your addresses and you do not need independent routing, an ASN may not be necessary. Ask the upstream about the routing model.

Is IPv6 PI always better than leasing?

No. PI gives an eligible End User an independent registry assignment with sponsorship obligations, while a lease grants contractual use of another holder's resource. Compare routing, prefix size, ongoing fees and exit plans.

Does sponsorship guarantee global routing?

No. RIPE NCC approval, registry records, ROAs and LOAs do not force upstreams to accept a route.
