Short answer: Announcing a leased IPv6 prefix requires an agreed origin ASN and an upstream willing to carry it, alongside suitable route6 and RPKI ROA records. The records do not guarantee propagation or acceptance.

IPv6 for BGP: what network operators need

Plan customer blocks with the IPv6 /32, /48 and /56 addressing guide before choosing a prefix size.

Before requesting an IPv6 block

Confirm the organisation, intended network use, origin ASN and upstream provider. An ASN alone does not provide connectivity; the upstream must accept your prefix.

ROA and route6 are different

An RPKI Route Origin Authorization states which ASN is authorized to originate the prefix. A RIPE route6 object records IRR routing intent. Networks may check both using their own policies.

Activation and verification

After agreement and payment, the provider coordinates route6, ROA and reverse DNS as applicable. Check propagation with your upstream; no registry record guarantees global reachability.
